The King of Marsabit

Ahmed the Elephant, often referred to as “The King of Marsabit,” holds a special place in the hearts of both locals and wildlife enthusiasts around the world. This magnificent creature, a symbol of resilience and conservation, has a remarkable story to tell. Known for his imposing size and regal presence, was a legendary bull elephant who roamed the rugged landscapes of Marsabit, Kenya. With his grand tusks and noble demeanor, Ahmed was a true king among his kind. Tragically, Ahmed passed away in 1974, but his legacy lives on. Today, his remains rest in the National Museums of Kenya, where visitors from all over the world pay their respects to the King of Marsabit.

I can recommend the Jirime Hotel if you are transiting Marsabit. The rooms are very simple, but the shower was hot and worked fine. The food was better than expected and the staff were friendly and helpful. It is beetle season so the corridor had a few uninvited guests, but they were too big to squeeze under the bedroom door. At roughly USD 33 a night, I thought it was good value.

"Rooms are good spacious, old wooden style beds, good enough for 2 in many rooms, shower area is neat as far as standards are considered. I enjoyed the space I got in room and in lounge area, specially watching the TV and football matches. They can try having ventilators in rooms, for guests like me who want fans/air conditioners for sleeping. You need to open the windows for ventilation, but then also get the mosquito for company. Do keep your antibug creams along."
